Energy security for the new generation of sporting environments
Modern sports venues are changing rapidly. Whereas a sports complex once primarily revolved around matches and training facilities, many venues today function as complete multifunctional environments. Stadium lighting, livestreaming, LED screens, EV charging facilities, hospitality, temporary events, smart building systems and extensive data infrastructures are driving a sharp increase in energy demand.
At the same time, more and more sites are running up against limitations in the electricity grid. Grid congestion, peak loads and limited connection capacity often make expansion or the transition to sustainable energy complex and costly. Against this backdrop, there is a growing need for flexible, scalable and intelligent energy solutions.

More than just energy storage
The VDL e-PU10 is designed for environments where high power, reliability and flexibility come together.
With a power output of 360 kVA and a storage capacity of up to 800 kWh, the e-PU10 provides a powerful solution for sites facing substantial and fluctuating energy demands. It is not just about storing energy, but also about intelligently managing energy within complex operational data environments
In addition to the e-PU10, VDL also develops Custom Made Utility energy storage systems for large-scale commercial use. These systems are fully tailored to the customer’s specific requirements and circumstances, such as higher power outputs, the desired storage capacity, the maximum available space and connection to the existing energy infrastructure. It is precisely with complex energy challenges that we are keen to take on the challenge of working with the customer to arrive at a suitable bespoke solution.
The installation can be used for peak shaving, temporary grid reinforcement, energy optimisation and backup facilities. Within hybrid energy systems too, combined with generators or renewable generation, the e-PU10 provides a stable link in a reliable microgrid.
Thanks to the rapid response time and intelligent energy balancing, peak loads can be actively managed without immediately expanding the grid connection. This creates scope to make existing sports facilities more sustainable while remaining operationally flexible.

Developed for demanding and dynamic environments
Sports and event venues have a variable energy profile. During regular training sessions, the load is relatively limited, while matches, evening activities or international events cause sudden peaks in power demand.
It is precisely in these kinds of dynamic situations that the power of the e-PU10 comes to the fore. The fully liquid-cooled system is designed for intensive use and stable performance under a wide range of conditions. The compact 10ft housing minimises the required footprint. With an IP55 rating, the housing is dust-resistant and protected against water jets, making it suitable for reliable use in both temporary and permanent outdoor installations. In addition, the system complies with PGS37-1, and its fire safety has been tested in accordance with UL9540A.
This makes the solution suitable for, among other things:
• professional sports stadiums
• multifunctional sports parks
• indoor arenas
• temporary sports and festival sites
• training complexes
• sports campuses
• venues with temporary expansion of energy capacity
In addition, the modular scalability makes it possible to connect multiple systems in parallel, allowing even greater power requirements to be managed without immediately implementing major permanent grid expansions.

Combined with VDL Powernet, this also creates a complete intelligent energy platform. This enables sports venues to monitor, analyse and actively manage energy flows in real time. From peak shaving and smart charging to fleet management, remote monitoring and data-driven energy optimisation, everything is managed centrally within one integrated energy environment.
Energy infrastructure as part of the sporting experience
Tomorrow’s sporting environment requires not only excellent facilities, but also smart and reliable energy supplies that adapt to changing usage patterns.
From evening matches with high-quality LED lighting to international (mobile) events with extensive broadcasting, hospitality and mobility facilities, energy is becoming an increasingly prominent part of the overall user experience. With the e-PU10, VDL Sports Projects positions itself not merely as a supplier of energy storage, but as a partner in developing future-ready sports infrastructure.
